All Offices Closed for Memorial Day

Did you know that Memorial Day isn’t just for BBQs, beach trips, and graduation parties?

Memorial Day is a day in which we can remember and honor those men and women who lost their lives while defending our country.

While you are enjoying your loved ones this weekend, take the time to search for “names of fallen soldiers,” and then choose one to learn about. Read their story and take a moment to truly remember and honor them for the sacrifice they made for you. Just one name. Just one story.

Then when you’re enjoying time with your family and friends – enjoying freedoms that we can sometimes take for granted – pass that story along to them to help keep a legacy alive.

Don’t let this weekend pass without recognizing why it exists in the first place!

Women’s History Month

Did you know – March is Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month had its origins as a National celebration in 1981 when Congress passed a Law proclaiming the week beginning in March 7th, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Today we observe Women’s History for the entire month of March. We celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

At HMI, as we strive to be a part of every engineered HVAC system, we want to take a moment and celebrate some of the remarkable women who’ve made huge impacts in the HVAC industry.

There are countless other women who have impacted and are impacting the HVAC industry. They are doing exciting work and improving the industry for everyone.

Black History Month

Did you know that each year, there is a Black History Month theme?

Last year, in 2022, the theme was Black Health and Wellness. For 2023, the theme is Black Resistance.

By resisting, Black people have achieved triumphs, successes, and progress as seen in the end of chattel slavery, the dismantling of Jim and Jane Crow segregation in the South, increased political representation at all levels of government, desegregation of educational institutions, the passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History in DC and increased and diverse representation of Black experiences in media. Black resistance strategies have served as a model for every other social movement in the country, thus, the legacy and importance of these actions cannot be understated.

Here are 4 ways to honor Black History Month:
1. Support Black-owned businesses. For example – a local Black-owned business in Charleston is The Tiny Tassel. You can find other companies by searching the #blackowned hashtag online.

2. Learn about noteworthy Black figures and their contributions. Discover more about North Carolinians John Chavis or Abraham Galloway. Or learn more about the first African American woman licensed as a physician in South Carolina, Dr. Matilda Arabelle Evans.

3. Donate to charities that support anti-racism equity and equality.

4. Purchase, read, and share books by Black authors. Check out Alex Cage at www.alexcage.com.
