Recognizing Patriot Day / Remembering 9.11.2001

Today we remember and honor the brave Americans who met the terror of September 11th with extraordinary acts of courage and sacrifice.

Patriot Day – Did You Know?

Patriot Day is a US holiday to commemorate the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks. US Congress decided on an annual day of remembrance that same year.

Interesting Facts:

  • The national flag is to be flown at half-mast on all government buildings and homeowners are asked to display the flag on their homes.
  • A moment of silence is to be held at 8:46 AM, as this marks when the first plane flew into the World Trade Center.
  • Patriot Day can be confused with Patriots’ Day which is another holiday that recognizes the American soldiers who died while fighting
in the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
  • President Barack Obama expanded the holiday to Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in 2009.

Grandparents’ Day – September 8th, 2024

Yesterday, Sunday, September 8th, was Grandparents’ Day! Grandparents are essential to our lives in so many different ways. Enjoy these little anecdotes about grandparents from some of our team!

“My grandmother on my dad’s side has a recipe for green bean casserole that is a staple at every family get together.”

“My grandmother on my mom’s side and I started making Christmas candy when I was around 10 or 12 years old and it now includes my younger brother and my wife, Mary. We make chocolate covered peanut butter balls, chocolate covered cherries and peppermint patties.”

“My grandfather will ask someone to ‘use your intelligence.’ This is when he needs someone to stand on a board to cut it with a saw.”

“Several years ago, my wife, Eleanor and I took my grandson, Dominick, to Grandfather Mountain. After walking around and getting this picture on the Mile High Bridge we were having some lunch in the café there. We were chatting about the mountain and wondering where the name Grandfather Mountain came from?? He looked at me, grinned and said ‘because it’s SOOOOH OLD’!! OUCH!!”

“I was named ‘Margaret’ after my maternal grandmother whom we affectionately called Mema. I am technically a fourth generation Margaret with my great grandmother, grandmother, mother, and myself all having been named Margaret. We named our middle daughter ‘Maisie’ without knowing that it is traditionally a nickname for Margaret in Scotland. Kismet. Maisie is the perfect reminder of my independent, badass, strong matriarch, Mema. I see so much of my grandmother in her!”

We would love for you to share some fond memories, fun quotes, or special anecdotes from time spent with your grandparents or grandchildren! ❤️
